History
The Abode of Love (Agepemone) – A Storied Gem in the Heart of Spaxton, Somerset
Nestled in the serene and picturesque countryside of Spaxton, Somerset, The Abode of Love, also known as Agepemone, stands as a captivating testament to the rich history and heritage of the region. With its sweeping views of the rolling hills and the quiet charm of the village, this remarkable property is more than just a home—it is a place where the threads of time and beauty have woven a captivating narrative for generations.
The Agepemoneites were a Christian sect that originated in the mid-19th century in England, during the Victorian period. The sect was founded by a man named Henry Prince, who is often referred to as “Prince Henry” within the cult. The group’s beliefs were quite unconventional for the time and included spiritual and communal ideals.
Members of the group lived together in close quarters, following strict rules of behaviour and worship. The sect was based around the idea of “universal love” and the cultivation of purity and spirituality. They saw their lifestyle as a rejection of the materialism and sinfulness of mainstream Victorian society.
Decline and Legacy
Despite its initial growth, the Agepemoneites eventually faded from prominence. The exact reasons for their decline are unclear, but the sect’s unconventional practices and Henry Prince’s charismatic leadership may have contributed to its eventual dissolution. The Abode of Love community ceased to be a major force by the late 19th century, although it continued into the mid-20th century under a second leader; known as ‘Beloved’.
Today, the historical significance of the Agepemoneites is largely forgotten, but their brief existence reflects the wider trend of religious experimentation and utopian communities that emerged during the Victorian era. In some ways, their focus on love, spirituality, and communal living can be seen as part of the broader social movements that sought to create a more perfect and harmonious society.
The property was built in 1860; the third and final section of the Abode of Love. It benefits from not being listed despite its unique history. Being built as separate section, property benefits from wide walls ensuring it is cool in the summer and neighbourly noise is never an issue.
The sellers have enjoyed twenty-two happy years in the property having sent their children to the village school and joined in with many of the village’s active social groups. They have shaped the property around their needs and wants, creating a large double garage with adjoining workshop and garden office.
The couple were initially sold by the solid Oak central staircase, the masses of space that the property yielded and large open fireplace within the living space.
The kitchen majestically opens into the living room via two large oak doors giving a sense of drama that never stops to bring a smile to visitors.
The property has helped the current owners to grow their fledgling businesses and over the years they have rented the top floor flat to help with cashflow!
Modern Potential
While the Agapemone’s historical significance is undeniable, the property also offers continued modern potential. The grounds and versatile home provide opportunities for various uses, from a large private family residence, home office or accommodation for HPC workers. The houses tranquil setting and beautiful surroundings make it an ideal location for those looking to create a unique living or business space.
A Rare Opportunity
Owning the Agapemone means becoming a steward of a remarkable piece of history. This property is not just a home; it is a story waiting to be continued. Whether you are drawn to its historical significance, architectural beauty, or the potential for modern adaptation, the Agapemone and Barford Gables offers a unique and compelling opportunity.
